A Lovely Day on Chincoteague-Assateague

Chincoteague and Assateague Islands on Virginia's Eastern Shore have been my favorite vacation spots for the past 20 years and even with the changes of modern development, they remain near the top. LindaK and I spent yesterday exploring both islands with that 20-year distance for me and a newness for her.

Even with the development on the waterfront at Chincoteague and the opening of the beaches on Assateague, it remains one of the more charming spots on the East Coast.

LindaK walks along the Assateague beach.

Chincoteague remains a charming village, even with the large condos and hotels that have sprung up in the downtown area. You can still watch the crab boats motor out at dawn each day (as you can see with the top photo on this blog, shot 20 years ago by me).

We didn't see any of the famous ponies on Assateague and the mosquito population seemed enormously healthy, but it is clean, open, and inviting. The natives tell us that on hotter summer days and weekends the crowds get so big that the bridge between the islands becomes one-lane with a long wait to get in and pay your $10 daily ($25 for the season) visiting fee.

Here is some of what it looked like on the Assateague beach.
