A Tribute to Miss Julia, the Iris Lady

These irises have been blossoming annually this time of the year for the entire time I have lived in my little Northwest Roanoke stucco Cape Cod. They represent part of the legacy of Roanoke City Market's Iris Lady, Miss Julia.

She died several years ago and probably thousands of Roanokers have this lovely reminder of her in their yards in a rainbow of colors. My special favorite is the peach-colored iris, which was moved this past fall and is taking this spring off from blooming. But it will be back.

In this photo, the iris is framed by one of my two fig trees, which have also thrived.
